Luke 2:10-11 (NKJV) Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 13 And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
The messages of Christmas are all around us. The music that feels good, stirring memories of times past. Twinkling lights, carefully wrapped gifts…and oh yeah…good tidings… great joy…all people?
In the midst of Christmas activities, church services with brightly glowing candles, parties and shoppers bustling all around, there is often a dark side.
The contrast is as obvious as the picture above. A dark side of grief for some families, and a dark side of failure for others threatens to spoil the season. Loneliness, separation from loved ones, unmet expectations, fear and anxiety can spin us into hopelessness. Ten minutes of listening to the “bad” news can overshadow the good news of great joy.
For me, when the dark feelings threaten to steal my Christmas joy, that’s where faith comes in. Faith that pushes me back to the Word of God and right to the feet of the Savior who was born to save me from all that darkness, from my own sin and failure. Faith that replaces negative feelings with an inner assurance that God is indeed Emanuel, God with us! Listen carefully for the angels and the heavenly hosts, and suddenly…unexpectedly…in big ways and small, may you hear their praises this season and reflect His Love to others!
